India has long been a hotspot for alternative fuel innovations, and when it comes to two-wheelers, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) seems to be gaining serious traction. After Bajaj introduced the Freedom 125, the world’s first CNG motorcycle, TVS has now taken things up a notch by rolling out the first-ever CNG-powered scooter.
Unveiled at this year’s Bharat Mobility Expo, this CNG variant of the TVS Jupiter is making waves as a more sustainable and fuel-efficient option for urban commuters. Given that the Jupiter has consistently been one of the best-selling scooters in India, it makes perfect sense for TVS to introduce this eco-friendly alternative in an already well-established model.
What’s Under the Hood?
Much like the Bajaj Freedom 125, the TVS Jupiter CNG runs on a dual-fuel setup. It comes with a 1.4-kg CNG tank along with a 2-liter petrol reserve, giving it an impressive combined range of 140 miles (226 km). If you rely solely on CNG, the scooter delivers 52 miles (84 km) per kilogram of CNG.
But, as with all things innovative, there’s a trade-off. Since the CNG tank is located under the seat, you lose out on the spacious 33-liter storage compartment found in the petrol-powered Jupiter. While that might be a bummer for some, TVS has ensured that the CNG refueling nozzle is also placed under the seat, making it easy to access when needed.
Switching between CNG and petrol is seamless, thanks to a dedicated toggle switch on the handlebar. And to further boost fuel efficiency, TVS has integrated its eco-thrust fuel injection system along with intelliGO start-stop technology.
TVS Jupiter CNG Performance: How Does It Ride?
Powering the TVS Jupiter CNG is a 124.8cc air-cooled, single-cylinder bi-fuel engine, which churns out 7.2 horsepower and 7 lb-ft (9.4 Nm) of torque. That’s slightly lower than the petrol-only Jupiter 125, which boasts 8.1 hp and 7.7 lb-ft (10.5 Nm). However, this trade-off in power is balanced by lower emissions and cost savings on fuel.
The scooter is equipped with a CVT automatic gearbox, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free ride. With a top speed of 50 mph (80.5 km/h), it’s well-suited for city commuting.
TVS Jupiter CNG Features: More Than Just a Green Scooter
While the TVS Jupiter CNG is all about sustainability, it doesn’t skimp on modern features. Here’s what you get:
✔ LED Headlamp for better visibility
✔ USB Charging Port to keep your phone juiced up on the go
✔ Semi-Digital Instrument Cluster with multiple key readouts
✔ Side Stand Indicator for added safety
✔ All-in-One Lock System for convenience
✔ The Largest Seat in the 125cc Segment—because comfort matters!
For those worried about seating space, TVS claims that Jupiter’s seat is the biggest in its class, making it comfortable for riders of all sizes.
How Much Will It Cost? TVS Jupiter CNG
Right now, the petrol-powered Jupiter 125 is priced between INR 79,540 (US$918) and INR 90,721 (US$1,050). Since the CNG version brings additional tech and features, expect it to be priced slightly higher.
While TVS hasn’t announced an official release date, industry speculation suggests a late 2025 launch in India.
Final Thoughts: Is the TVS Jupiter CNG Worth It?
With fuel prices constantly fluctuating and the world moving towards greener alternatives, the TVS Jupiter CNG seems like a smart and eco-friendly choice for urban commuters. It’s cleaner than petrol, reduces emissions by around 20%, and still offers the convenience of switching to petrol when needed.
Sure, you lose some storage space, and the performance is slightly lower, but for city rides and daily commutes, the fuel savings and environmental benefits make it a strong contender in the 125cc scooter segment.
